Texas is a team that may just be one of the most one-sided teams in the country. On one hand they’ve rallied all the way to being a top 10 KenPom offense currently sitting at 9th. On the other, they still struggle at times defensively where they find themselves ranked almost out of the top 100 at 97th. It really is a boom or bust way to play so far but Texas has been able to find huge wins as of late including against Alabama and Vanderbilt who have both been excellent offensively and great in general this season. In their game against Vanderbilt specifically, they controlled the game the entire way winning both halves and the game by double digits. Texas has recently also went on the road to beat Georgia by 20 out-scoring them 57-30 in the second half. They were able to showcase how elite they can be offensively but also how they’re capable of holding another great offense to a poor shooting night and 13 turnovers on 11 assists.

None of their top four scorers are shooting 35%+ from three on the season and they’re still able to maintain a top 10 offense. In their win against N.C. State earlier in the season, they shot 16-32 from three and put up 102 points. They’ve shown that they are able to beat other great offenses and currently hold a KenPom offensive ranking 27 spots ahead of their ranking last season which was 36th. A season ago the team found themselves leaving the NCAA tournament very early bouncing in the First Four to Xavier. Some positive signs for Texas is that they did lose their first meetings to Vanderbilt and Alabama last season so winning this time around is a huge sign of improvement. They were able to add Dailyn Swain this season from that Xavier team that they lost to. Swain averaged 24.5 ppg in the NCAA tournament and brings tremendous experience to this team alongside Tramon Mark who has played in the Final Four previously.

The most recent bracketology has Texas in a very similar scenario as last season in the First Four against Miami. This would be a rematch of the 2023 Elite 8 in an absolute classic that saw Miami come out on top 88-81. That Miami team held the 6th ranked offense and 99th defense which are very similar numbers to this year's Texas team. Texas that season finished with the 15th ranked offense and 13th defense but still couldn't keep up with an elite Miami offense. This time around, Miami is 49th offensively and 48th defensively giving Texas the huge scoring advantage. If they can get past the First Four they would play St. John’s which is another team outside of a top 25 offense. Texas could find early rhythm in their first game and find a way to bring that once again to carry them to the round of 32. A matchup against Kansas would be tough but Texas will have much more experience in play here. If Texas does make it to the second weekend they could potentially see an Illinois team who is on a roll and hold the #1 ranked offense in the nation. This could be a tougher region than another one and things can shift from now until Selection Sunday. Either way, it's clear this Texas team is capable of being elite.
